UC Berkeley student experience surveys identify that 39% of Undergraduates and 23% of Graduate students are food insecure. Additionally, per the Spring 2016 Housing Insecurity Preliminary Study, 11% of Undergraduates and 8% of Graduate students self-reported they experienced homelessness at some point of their UC Berkeley experience. Our Basic Needs Coordinators are the student leaders at the forefront of making UC Berkeley basic needs secure! 

Coordinator compensation varies depending on student experience and work-study availability:

Application information:

Selection process:

  • Applicants must be available for a 20 mins interview either Monday 5/1 between 9-12PM or Tuesday 5/2 between 12-3PM
  • Selected leaders must be able to participate in our Basic Needs Transition Retreat Thursday 5/4 10-3PM (transportation & meals provided)
  • Exceptions can be made for academic, health, and/or important personal reasons

Branding Coordinator 

Coordinator will support the UC Berkeley Basic Needs Committee with (i) design and upkeep of both basic needs and food pantry websites, (ii) coordination of monthly public newsletter, (iii) the production of basic needs marketing materials, and (iv) being a student representative at weekly and monthly leadership meetings. We look forwarding to adding a committed & passionate coordinator who will make sure we have high quality materials to affirm our credibility, establish trust, and maximize engagement by all target stakeholders. All basic needs coordinators have the opportunity to work with interns and volunteers. Total count of interns and volunteers is dictated per coordinator.

Qualifications:

  1. Effective task completion strategies and skills
  2. Excellent time and energy management skills
  3. Intermediate to advanced experience producing graphic design materials using ADOBE Creative Suite Programs (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)
  4. Experience with or willingness to learn website platforms (e.g. SquareSpace and Wordpress)
  5. Efficient interpersonal communication
  6. Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) or other programs that can produce work in those formats

CalFresh Student Coordinator

Coordinator will support the UC Berkeley Basic Needs Committee with leading our campus CalFresh efforts. This coordinator has three key responsibilities (i) weekly CalFresh clinics, (ii) monthly CalFresh trainings for on-campus community members, and (iii) being a student representative at weekly and monthly leadership meetings. This coordinator will work closely with the Alameda County Community Food Bank CalFresh Team, the School of Social Welfare CalFresh Team, and county social workers. All basic needs coordinators have the opportunity to work with interns and volunteers. Total count of interns and volunteers is dictated per coordinator.

  4. Effective organizational, case management, and task completion skills
  5. Excellent time and energy management skills
  6. Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) or other programs that can produce work in those formats

Community Programs Coordinator

Coordinator will support the UC Berkeley Basic Needs Committee with (i) annual leadership retreats, (ii) coordination of bi-monthly coalition meetings, (iii) coordination of hunger & homelessness awareness week, (iv) coordination of end of year celebration, and (v) serve as student representative at weekly and monthly leadership meetings. All basic needs coordinators have the opportunity to work with interns and volunteers. Total count of interns and volunteers is dictated per coordinator.

  3. Positive attitude and growth mindset
  4. Superb interpersonal communication and organizational skills
  5. Proven track record of successful event and/or program coordination
  6. Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) or other programs that can produce work in those formats
 

Video & Photography Coordinator

Coordinator will support the UC Berkeley Basic Needs Committee with the creation of our campus video series. The series will include personal short-video narratives, introduction to basic needs services, and a campus promotional video to be housed in the campus basic needs website. In addition to this video series, this coordinator will serve as our committee’s photographer for major events and efforts. Camera and equipment will be provided to coordinator. Camera and equipment have been sponsored by both the UC Berkeley Student Tech Fund and the UC Global Food Initiative. All basic needs coordinators have the opportunity to work with interns and volunteers. Total count of interns and volunteers is dictated per coordinator.

  5. Proven track record of successful video production and photography
  6. Intermediate to advanced knowledge of video production software
  7. Intermediate to advanced knowledge of photography editing software  
  8. Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) or other programs that can produce work in those formats
